Poetic Reflections from Survivors

Dawn

My heart is like the night,
So dark that everything is a surprise.
I am deeply scared,
Because the stars can't hear my cries.
And the moon seems to glow,
As I wait for you to rise.
- Saereen Qureshi

In Search of Peace

Where the stars fall,
And the moon glows.
Where the sun rises,
And the darkness goes.
Where the flowers bloom,
And the wind blows.
Where the water falls,
And at the end it shows.
- Saereen Qureshi

Positive Force

I looked for the task ahead of me
To muse on my own fantasy.
I watched the pier, then the sky line
As things sailed towards the open sky,
Someone was calling "stop playing character".

For this is the best time of your life.
Be confident and insistent,
Away from the dark
For the sun light will
Cure you from your ailment,
The air will kiss your temples
And the sand will purify your feet
Suddenly I am not in the dark
Suddenly I am a life force
Blessed by god.
- Mohamad Musa

Violence

The world isn't a safe place,
Crimes and murders on the street.
There's deaths every year,
Because no one stands on their feet.
I look all around me,
And blood is all I see,
If blood is not in sight,
Then drugs are not pleasing to me.
What will happen to us,
Will the crying ever drown.
Or will we sink into the tears,
And have nothing better to do but frown.
I sit here with concern,
As I look at a future not so bright.
Will we ignore the problem,
Or will we stand up for our right.
- Saereen Qureshi
